The sign of a truly modern construction contracting company is its ability to adapt to the times. The fields of electrical and teledata have increasingly intermingled in recent years, making it vitally important to be equally knowledgeable in low voltage systems as well as standard electrical. Kirby has successfully responded to the challenge by creating its own teledata division, capable of handling any job from small to large.
Winning the University of Pittsburgh data maintenance contract has certainly kept us on our toes over the years. Every week new projects pop up all over campus, and our crew must be ready at all times to keep the university’s data system up and running. 300,000 feet of Cat6A cable later, and we’re already looking forward to the next challenge!
A typical contracting job deals with one location at a time. The new security camera project for the Housing Authority of Pittsburgh was no typical job. 820 new cameras networked between 17 different sites spread all over the city put us to the test in terms of scheduling and project managing. It’s safe to say we passed with flying colors.
Keeping clients satisfied over the long term, and not only for temporary projects, is something we pride ourselves in. For the last twenty years as Contract Media Engineers for AT&T, Kirby employees have maintained, designed, and upgraded over 3500 miles of outside plant fiberoptic network cable.
When Thermofisher Scientific needed to design and build a data center for their headquarters, they entrusted the complicated task to Kirby Electric. This vital project involved installation of an emergency generator, a UPS standby power system, a new electrical service upgrade, and an installation of power feeds to all of their computer and HVAC equipment.
The impressive feature of the UPMC Forbes Tower Data Center project was keeping two data centers running online simultaneously as updates were made to both. Large UPS systems as well as PDU’s, generators, and entire new battery rooms were also installed.
PNC Bank’s National Data Center is the “brains” of a vast financial network. The job entailed huge switch gear and emergency generators. Incoming electrical service is constantly monitored through sophisticated equipment, in which even a minimal variation instantly activates the emergency generators and other back up equipment to insure uninterrupted power supply.
